Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential further challenges.
